Great coffee, cakes, beers and Yorkshire spirit
Fika: A state of mind, an attitude. It’s an integral part of Swedish life, which means taking some time out of every day to spend time with friends, having a coffee or a bite to eat.
It’s the concept of Fika that has inspired Headingley’s newest coffee shop next to The Three Horseshoes, which opened on 17thApril. And it means that you’ll find a lot more than just coffee if you pop into Fika North – although, as the Scandinavians take their coffee very seriously, it is well worth the visit alone.

With a vegan-friendly made up of locally-sourced ingredients, a small but perfectly formed selection of local beers, organic wine and a well-stocked cake counter with sweet goodies from Porterhouse Cake Co and Sheffield’s Cawa, there are several other reasons to make the short walk from the centre of Headingley for an hour or three.
Owners Gemma and Elis Williams actually have a background in the super yacht industry, so are keen to bring a customer experience focused on enjoyment and relaxation to their Scandi establishment - along with a dose of Yorkshire sprit. And it’s not just for adults either – the message is very much inclusive; bring your kids and your dogs – all are welcome at Fika North.
Gemma explained, “Identity is very important for us. We’re proud to live, and have built a life, in Yorkshire and we wanted Fika North to reflect that passion. We also love the idea of the ritual and importance of coffee. We want our customers to feel comfortable enough to take time out to enjoy that ritual with family, friends, colleagues or classmates. The idea is that Fika North will become as embedded in the community as the Yorkshire stone from which the building is made!”
