Bubble Tea trend takes off in Liverpool with 100 free drinks

Well-known Taiwanese bubble tea brand, Gong Cha, will open the doors of its latest branch on Bold Street on 4th September. The soft drink store will offer over forty different variations featuring a range of textures and layers alongside pearls, fruit jellies and milk foam to create different combinations of tastes and flavours.

Bold Street is a meeting place for people who like to try new things and pick up on trends

Originating in Taiwan in the 1980s, the oldest known bubble tea consisted of a mixture of hot Taiwanese black tea, shaken with condensed milk, and syrup or honey. Small tapioca pearls or ‘bubbles’ are then added, though there are many other toppings available as well. Many variations followed including those with added fruit purees and flavourings; the most common are served cold rather than hot.

Popular variations include ‘Dirtea’, a dessert-like drink combining their signature milk foam, fresh milk, and brown sugar pearls topped off with Oreo crumbs. Other favourites include ‘Strawberry Milk Green Tea’, ‘Mango Matcha’ and ‘Lemon Juice with Ai-Yu Jelly & White Pearl’.

To celebrate the launch, Gong cha will be giving away a free drink to the first 100 customers through the door on opening day and all customers will be able to enjoy an exclusive offer of a free drink with every purchase on selected drinks throughout the opening weekend.

Gong cha translates as ‘tribute tea for the emperor’ and is the most recognised bubble tea brand globally with 1,500 outlets across 20 different territories as far reaching as Taiwan, Korea, New Zealand and the USA.

Justin Liew, head of Gong cha England, said: “The bubble tea trend has gripped Asia, Oceania and the US, where it is considered a Taiwanese speciality. We are confident the people of Liverpool will love it once they’ve tried it. Bold Street is a meeting place for people who like to try new things and pick up on trends and we are locating our store at its heart to offer the refreshing bubble tea range to those who are curious to sample a completely fresh taste sensation.”

Gong cha uses paper seals and paper wrapping for its straws as part of its effort to reduce the amount of plastic being used. Bio-degradable, non-plastic straws are also being sourced and will be phased out in line with government regulations.

The new Liverpool store will open on the 4th September.

Opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 12PM to 8PM
